Thomas M. Gellhaus, M.D., was born, raised, and educated in a small town in South Dakota. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Dr. Gellhaus’ first two years of medical school were completed at the University of South Dakota, with the last two clinical years completed at the University of Oklahoma in 1983.

Following graduation in June 1983, he studied anatomic and clinical pathology in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. During this time he learned a tremendous amount of medicine, but discovered that he enjoyed working with patients much more.

After being accepted in the University of Iowa Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program, Dr. Gellhaus and his family moved to Iowa City, where he completed four years of extensive training. He has now practiced in the Quad Cities since 1990.

In 1999, Dr Gellhaus was awarded the John McCain Memorial Fellowship by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). He has spent a period of time living in Washington, D.C. following federal legislators on women’s health care issues. In 2001 he was awarded the Primary Care Policy Fellowship from the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services. During this 6 month fellowship he developed health policy that was presented to the U.S. Secretary of Health of Human Services. He also remains active within ACOG at a national and district level advocating for women’s health issues.

Dr. Gellhaus is married to Melanie. They have three children and two grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys golf and reading. He is committed to missionary work and makes an annual trip to provide medical/surgical services in poverty-stricken third world countries.
